In this panel discussion, Black community members, nonprofit leaders, investors and foundation program officers will share how they are philanthropists, reminding us that the word means so much more than we think.

....Philanthropy is the active effort to promote human welfare.

...Philanthropy is an act or gift done or made for humanitarian purposes.

Yes, philanthropy is also an organization distributing or supported by funds set aside for humanitarian purposes, and yes, these institutions tend to be dominated by white, wealthy men, and their families.

BUT...philanthropy in its fullest sense involves ALL OF US. And none more than Black Americans, who give more as a share of their wealth than White Americans, and have a long legacy of mutual aid and giving that has sustained their communities without support from traditional philanthropy.

In celebration of Black Philanthropy Month and Give 8/28 -- a global day of giving to support black led and black benefiting organizations -- Virginia Community Voice will bring together the unique perspectives of Black Richmonders who embody philanthropy through their investments of time, talent, and treasure.
