Youth programs coordinator
Shakirah is the Youth Programs Coordinator for Virginia Community Voice, who oversees and facilitates our youth programs - such as ARCA [2021 - Present] our Youth Leadership Fellowship [2022 - 2023], and YEER (Youth Empowerment through Eviction Research) [2021 - 2022]. Prior to becoming the Youth Programs Coordinator, she was a Community Advocate with Thriving Cities Group. She also has experience volunteering with youth at Caritas. Shakirah has an Associates Degree in Social Science that she has earned while taking dual enrollment in high school, graduating both in 2018. She was also a member of a literary magazine called Podium from 2014 - 2018 and has had her work published in their zines.
Shakirah is an artist, whose eye for detail can be seen in the work she produces, she draws inspiration from her life experiences. She is a photographer, a writer, a traditional and aspiring digital artist, a crochet artist, and a home baker who bakes from scratch. You’ll usually see her with a camera during a VACV event.
While working with Community Activists and in communities on Richmond’s Southside, she has gained insight into the way diversified communities react to positive change as well as how neighbors and community members interact with each other when there is a need for change in their communities. She also is an advocate for youth voice in communities across Richmond, helping youth build their voices for advocacy for their needs.
